How to Torrent

leave a comment »

You and your bad ass 12meg Comcast connection have not even begun to rip off copyrights and purchased licenses for intellectual property. That is to say that there is a wide world of downloading illicitly that eclipses entirely your experiences with Lime Wire.

Firstly, I recommend ditching Lime Wire like so much virus ridden and spy ware infested apps of which it contains. It is not your fault. You did not know that you may actually do your computer more good by pitching it off the edge of Niagara falls if filled with human excrement than use Crime Wire to download the shit for you. I hope that visual can at least approximate my sincere distain for the file sharing app and the harm that it has the potential to bring to my friends.

Secondly, you must have a similar program to facilitate the download of music, movies and applications but in a secure and peer-reviewed manor. “To Torrent” or torrenting requires a “torrent client” to facilitate connecting to all the users possessing the desired file. Provided, is a link to my preferred torrent program called utorrent. Please install utorrent so that I may use it to demonstrate the rest of what it is to torrent.

Unlike LW a program like utorrent does not allow you to use its program to search for files in different categories. For this Google is an excellent and superior substitute. With utorrent open please open your browser and navigate to Google. Now, in Google’s search bar you can input anything…. And put “torrent” after it. Similarly, if you have a torrent sharing site that you like particularly, like piratebay.org, you can search that.

Once you’ve found a torrent like Tokio Hotel’s newest album found on http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4198761/Tokio_Hotel_-_Scream_(2008)_%5BMp3%5D
Then you will find, somewhere on the page something along the lines of “Download this Torrent”. Click on it, allow the torrent file down load and your utorrent should pop up with a list of the files included in the torrent. Select any or all of the files and click ok. As long as the program stays active on the internet it will download.

A couple of things concerning the superior nature of the torrent. One, most downloads will have commentary as to their quality and security. These are user generated. So people just like you are endorsing that this file wont delete your win32 file or jack you passwords to rewrite you’re MySpace to read as to your interests in strange tech fetishes. Just sayin’ it happens.

Also the more seeders that are providing the torrent the faster it will download. Simalerly but to a lesser extent the more leachers. When you DL you are a “leacher” and when you have the completed file for someone else to DL you are a “seeder”.

I think that is about it. If you have more questions pertaining to torrenting there are plenty of tutorials online.

Enjoy and happy hunting,

To the Moon and Back

leave a comment »

I know; like when you let me sleep in the morning as you get up to take a shower, when I’m sick you procure remedies and make me take them, when I get my attention otherwise occupied by a game and you find something else to do for a bit…

These are not the only ways I know you care. This and more is how I feel you show your affection for me. And here are a few more ways I see.

I know; like when you stroke my hair when I lay my head in your lap, how extra apologetic you are when you even think you’ve injured me a bit, when you ware those things I like after remembering a compliment I gave…

Its silly that I’ve taken you for such granted. Like that one guy from that movie that didn’t understand what he had was great. But there are more than gifts of lasagna for you.

I know; like when you don’t hate me like you should when I make an ass of myself, like when you take that extra effort when making me a sandwich to include all the fixings, how you put up with me when I drag you into my arms to dance with me…

Its how I know you deserve only the best. that’s the only thing you’ve given me. Your glow is felt like another gift of warmth. Its just the way it should be.

I know; when I look up into your eyes what you mean to say, I kiss you softly and then you pull me tight, I hold you and you sigh as if there is no where else you’d rather be.

I’ll give this to you now though its awfully short. Its to the moon and back I’ll work until this is complete. I know that’s at least as far as you’d go to see me happy. These are all the ways I know you love me.

Many American people my age also think only about themselves. That is ok. That is their prerogative. I choose to study about the world because I think understanding the solutions to problems of other countries will help me better understand how we can improve America. We are not perfect, far from it. I believe it is the duty of every citizen in every democratic nation to demand only the best from their government. An informed electorate is and effective electorate. I have made it my personal responsibility to think and write about how we may improve our selves through some examples provided by japan and Europe.

The politicians in America rely on our ignorance and apathy to rule the public. Then when they need something that they can not get quietly they exaggerate and put fear in to the hearts of Americans that if action isn’t taken soon we will pay the price. I hate the shock doctrine. People don’t think for themselves a lot of the time. They trust entirely in government and media and don’t find out for themselves what they should support. I’m just really tired of the bull shit our government does.

The Field Of My Dreams

leave a comment »

I once found a perfect field on a summers day. It was bright and the sun bleached the grass a perfect gold. The flowers dotted over hill and dale, wild, vibrant. The breeze was calm and warm. The Trees that encircled the field were proud. All was serine but for the path on which I stood. It cut right down the middle. It asked a question.

I approached the trail from out of the bush. It moved me to answer its call. “Do you walk the path into the field to find what more beauty is begging to be seen? Or, would you not tempt the fates and take the path more traveled, down the hill, never again to venture here?” It was quite a proposition whose challenge I feared not. Not knowing what I would find but thirsty to find the spring of which the trail spoke, I moved.

The field begged me to open the window with her stare. Her deep wanting eyes pulled me right through. I floated along the path, a little rugged from miss-use, but not deterred from my prize. I heard her lips, pink blossoms, whisper from the distance to come hither. The grasses, dark, passionate and wavy in the wind that pushed me from behind. The breeze urging me to continue.

Each movement of mine along the trail moves the world. If feel her. Distant so. Pressing against me with her finger to my lips as if to motion to follow. Taking back her finger she turns around. Playfully she hops and starts sprinting up the trail. I oblige and make chase. Looking behind at me over one shoulder, her eyes pulling me. Her hair shining in the sun whips over her shoulder.

I catch up to you. And pass you. I stop just ahead, not giving you time to slow. I catch you with elegant poise. ’Round we go, dizzied. I let you fall soft on the grass beside the trail and I follow beside you. Close now I stare into you. Asking if this was the pinnacle of what I was meant to see. Take you cheek in one hand, pull you closer. I can see the sparks and fire. I can see the jagged stones to be cleared. And then, I see the spring.

From where I sit I feel as If I could dive strait into the vast, lovely pools that are your eyes. The wind presses against my back. Softly at first then with enough force to meet you. That day turned into a blur. The sun dimmed, the grass dulled, the flowers that once fluoresced wilted, only you sat in front of me. Outshine all expectation. No summers day could compare to the brilliance comes fourth from the spring deep inside you I feel from your lips. Your passionate, bold, comforting, wanting lips answered the call. I walked the path and found more than I’d imagined.

The Green Economy vs Black Economy & Energy Innovation Around The World

leave a comment »

After talking  to my Japanese friend, Moto, I found they consistently pay more for a gallon of gas and always have. “Up to  $6 a gallon”, he said. (I’m paraphrasing) Shocked at how not only Japan but most of Europe (upon a little investigation) have extremely high gas prices I poked around the “Internets” to find an explanation. (Just for my own information)

For the longest time I thought it was because of some special deal we have with Saudi Arabia that we get our fuel cheaper than the rest of the world. I enjoyed a couple of weeks back packing around Japan a couple of years ago and experienced first hand how different the attitudes on personal transit and energy consumption were. “Gas is expensive so we must change our habits.”

It sounds remarkably simple. I’ve heard about the gas crisis of the 1970′s. Cars lining up around the block, economies around the world halted, waiting for the next barrel of petrol. It was debilitating to nations. So, in strokes of political fortitude, lawmakers around the world found ways to drag their people out of oil dependency. One of the most effective strategies to wean people is incrementaly increasing the cost to use gas. A hefty tax on oil slowly convinced people the practicality in finding more affordable means of transportation, which the government planned to make available.

Every kind of alternative energy plan was put into use. Germany and Japan built high speed and light rail. The Swiss became the leading exporters in solar panels and windmills. Brazil gave incentives and invested in infrastructure for its sugar ethanol economy.  And France, they built the most nuclear reactors in the world to account for 70% of their total electricity use. All this while they had jacked up fuel prices and mandated more fuel efficient cars. Its a proven combination; engineer society through it’s pocket book.

It’s naive to think that leaving the power to the energy and auto industries will benefit society. The only things corporations are concerned with are minimizing expense wile maximizing profit. If they didn’t have to put seat belts or turn signals in cars they wouldn’t. People would still buy cars if those features weren’t included. The same idea applies with fuel efficiencies.

Intervention at the highest level is the only way this problem will be relieved.  You can spend all the money you like to create green jobs and a green economy but you need a reason to implement them. Regulations and standards as to the fuel efficiencies of cars, the carbon foot print of a building and the price of energy produced by renewable means.

Making it progressively cost prohibitive to continue using oil and coal, will move consumers to seek more practical venues. Industry will step in to provide what consumers want and what the government mandates.

There are many facets to building a “Green Economy”. Many nations have already made great bounds to attain their energy independence. America must step up and show the world that we will cast off the policies and methods of the last century, the “Black Economy”, in a big way. We will be better for it in the long run, economically and environmentally.

Commuting in Japan vs US & How to Promote Green Transit

I’m putting a new engine in my Mazda p5. The one that the speed 3 model has. 260 hp with built in turbo. Also new breaks and exhaust. I’m exited. Also with the worlds economy in the bucket gas is cheap again. $1.99 a gallon!! I never thought I would see oil at under $60 a barrel again.

I’m sorry I have kept…
You really loves car. Yes, gas is cheap again. It’s same here. This year’s Maximum price is about 1litre(about quarter of 1 gallon) is 200yen(about $2) over In Japan. now, 1litre about 95yen(about $1).

********************************************************************************

Wow, I wonder why gas is so much more expensive for you. I mean, if “Cheap gas” for you is $4 a gallon… do you know if you have a high gas tax or if its the expense of importing it all? Here in the US we import about 65% of our oil. Now its down to $1.69/ gallon.

$1.69/gallon $1.69/gallon

I think oil is a bad thing to have a society and economy so dependent upon. In Japan you don’t “need” to use it as much. You have lots of light and heavy passenger rail, a developed bus system and its more socially acceptable to ride a bike.

In the US its up to each city to plan its own public transit. No one really thought about constructing mass affordable commuter rail lines to go from city to city. The best you can find for public transit is here in Portland. The “MAX” (Metropolitan Express, our light rail service) only runs east to west.

portland transit

portland transit

If you wanted to hop a train to say, Seattle, you would pay about $200 for heavy rail. Also, you have to plan your trips pretty far in advance if you wanted to go that far. Not nearly as convenient or efficient as your Shinkansen. Our buses are actually nice… just socially unacceptable to ride. As are bikes. The idea of having to use public transit denotes that you have no other means of transportation. Like you don’t drive a car, there for poor. Its a terrible stigma. It doesn’t keep me from using it but that’s the way lots of people feel.

I think if you have it available public transportation should be your first choice for commuting. We should promote it as to say “You use the transit system for the good of society”. To decrease our nations’ dependence on oil. To conserve. To lower green house emissions and clean our air. It should be a national value not to be gluttonous and wasteful. America can be defined as that sometimes. We have so much so why care if some of it is squandered. People take a lot of our wealth for granted. “We will always have cheap, plentiful oil” Is a stupid assumption. People still find more ways to avoid taking the bus when they can more easily drive. Only when you “need” to drive, like to a transit station or where public transit doesn’t go, should you. Then buy fule efficeient cars. Hybrids and electric cars should be made more affordable/available.

Its a matter of changing social perception and values. Something that a large media engine and the government would have to promote. Calling something patriotic in America gets a lot of attention. “For the good of the nation”  That is the way to do it. Also, government incentives to get companies and people build and buy electric cars. Like EV purchase incentives; rebates, tax incentives or other purchase incentives available at the city, state or national government level. And EV Usage measures; Availability of free charging in both public and private sector locations, Freedom from congestion charges or road use tolls, Free on-street and off-street parking for EV’s and preferred parking locations, Ability to use bus, taxi and high-occupancy vehicle lanes on city and surrounding area roads, Customer discounts on electricity.

There is a lot to be done concerning our nation’s transportation needs. It is a topic that we could learn a lot from the Japanese .

Out My Window

leave a comment »

I look out my window and I see the trees desperately trying to hang on to a year that plotted to rob them of the light and warmth they need to last the winter. The trees, they wilt. Their leaves, they fall. All the month they’ve wondered what happened to the spring. It came so late, so cold.

Through October they stood against the wind and rain to chance to soak in the last brilliant day of fall. I do hope they last to see another year. I’m confidant the conditions not being so harsh that they will spring back with a vengeance.

They know as well as well as I if they might concede to the cold that their absence would destabilize the bank of the creek on which they sit. And the ivy, they too will miss the trees. Their shade keeps the ivy from being bleached by the cruel summer scorch. And lastly, I would miss them. Although they don’t provide anything that my survival is contingent upon I still value them a deal. With out those proud trees, when I look out my window, all I would behold is the home and property of our less than amenable neighbors. Not nearly as sweet.

Haddaway-What is Love w/ Carl Sagan

leave a comment »

Carl Sagan was pretty cool. Personally, he is the reason I became interested in space and science fiction. When I was about eleven a friend of the family gave me a copy of a dozen episodes of Sagan’s television series “Cosmos”. I watched them over and over. I found him inspiring, as did a great many others I suspect. Some people have heroes that are exceptionally philanthropic like Jesus or the best at kicking ass and taking names like Chuck Norris. I have a hero who was one of the greatest thinkers of our time. I can think of many ways how Carl Sagan is basically un-beatable. Just take how brilliant, skeptical, optimistic, verbose, or any other trait that extenuates him to its “logical” exaggeration. Here, I will begin compiling a list. These statements, be they accurate or not, attempt to accentuate how great he was.

Also, there is this video that basically sums up what I’m talking about. Haddaway-What is Love w/ Carl Sagan
Sagan-isums, or Carl Sagan facts:

Carl Sagan could beat Data at a game of three dimensional chess (A StarTrek:NTG reference).
With only his ring finger and an etch-a-sketch Sagan could out draw M.C. Escher, artistically, while explaining a forth dimension in three dimensional terms.
Carl Sagan, with only his mind, won a match of tug of war verses a black hole.
Carl Sagan willed that there would be a liquid water ocean under the surface of Europa, and there was.
Carl Sagan entered into a fist fight with Ben Franklin and won by distracting him with a turkey sandwich.
Carl Sagan drew up the architectural plans of the hospital that he was to be born in.
In his ship of discovery, Sagan went back in time to mack on Marty’s mom, then to the future to burn the almanac before it could be purchased and then to Doc Brown’s lab to slap him for being Christopher Lloyd.
Carl Sagan spoke with The Emperor and convinced him that it would be for the best to destroy the Death Star before the rebels could take the credit for it.
Sagan invented space. Before him it was just a construct of the Matrix.
Sagan ate both pills, negotiated peace between humanity and the machines and rebuilt Zion single-handedly.
Without Sagan, Stephen Hawking would be a nerd with a voice box attached to wheels.
Carl Sagan can smell stupid.
Carl Sagan can hear you in space.
Carl Sagan travels faster than the speed of light.
Carl Sagan can see to the other side of black holes.
A poor-spoken man called Carl Sagan a cracker only once before he was crushed into a singularity.
Carl Sagan invented the “Final Frontier”. Before him it was just inches in front of the Enterprise.
Carl Sagan gave new meaning to “Billions and Billions”, as in “You would be crushed by my/a  __________ into billions and billions!”
Santa Clause kidnapped Carl Sagan to learn his magic. Then, Sagan escaped by using a trail of cookies to lead him to a black hole.
